What is Astigmatism?

Astigmatism is a refractive error caused by corneal curvature or an irregularly shaped lens. The ideal shape of the eyeball is round, and when light enters the eye, it should bend evenly on the retina. However, in astigmatism, the uneven shape of the eye causes light to bend unevenly.

Diagnosing Astigmatism

Astigmatism is checked during a routine eye exam at our office. Many of the tests used to measure nearsightedness and farsightedness are also used to test for astigmatism. Another technique called retinoscopy is used to measure astigmatism. This process involves shining a light into your eye using different lenses. Only a qualified optometrist can make an astigmatism diagnosis.

Causes of Astigmatism

Astigmatism has several causes, and the severity can vary for each person. While astigmatism can be genetic, it can also be caused by eye trauma, corneal pressure, corneal scarring, and keratoconus.

Symptoms of Astigmatism

The most common symptom of astigmatism is blurry vision. Patients also report seeing clear lines or shapes while others appear very blurry. Other common symptoms include eye fatigue, headaches, eye strain, and blurry vision at a distance. We can accurately diagnose astigmatism during a comprehensive eye exam at our office. We also specialize in pediatric eye care for astigmatism.

Treatment for Astigmatism

Luckily, there are several treatment options for astigmatism. The most common treatment is corrective eyeglasses or contact lenses. These help compensate for the irregular shape of your eye and allow light to focus properly on the retina, improving your vision. Another common option is refractive surgery, which uses laser technology to permanently correct the shape of the eye. Popular surgeries for astigmatism correction include LASIK and PRK.
