Here are answers to a few common questions we might hear about eye and vision exams:

Eye and Vision Exams FAQs

How Often Should I Get an Eye Exam?

That depends on your age, vision needs, and overall health.

●             Children: First exam at 6 months, then at age 3, then before starting school

●             Adults under 40: Every 1–2 years

●             Adults over 40: Every year, especially with a history of eye disease or chronic health issues

●             Contact lens wearers: Annually, to monitor lens fit and eye health

More frequent exams may be needed if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, or other medical conditions that affect vision.

What’s the Difference between a Vision Exam and an Eye Exam?

A vision exam focuses on how clearly you see. It can check for nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.

An eye exam looks deeper. It includes checking the health of your eyes, looking for signs of disease, and making sure your eyes are working well together.

We typically do both during the same visit.

What Happens during the Exam?

Expect several quick tests:

●             Reading from a vision chart

●             Trying different lenses to find your prescription

●             Checking your eye movement and alignment

●             Measuring pressure inside your eyes (to screen for glaucoma)

●             Examining your retina and optic nerve, sometimes with dilation

None of it is painful and most of the testing is over in less than an hour.

Do I Need to Have My Eyes Dilated?

Not always but it helps us get a better view of the retina and optic nerve. This is especially important for people with diabetes, high risk for glaucoma, or unexplained vision changes. The drops blur your vision for a few hours, so bring sunglasses and consider a ride home.

Can an Eye Exam Detect Other Health Problems?

Yes. Your eyes can show signs of health issues like:

●             Diabetes

●             High blood pressure

●             High cholesterol

●             Autoimmune conditions

Is It Safe for Kids to Get Eye Exams?

Absolutely. Vision plays a big role in learning and development. Early detection of issues like lazy eye or crossed eyes makes treatment much easier and more effective.
