Retinal Scanning

Retinal Scanning Eye Services

Retinal scanning has become one of the most familiar tools for optometry doctors in Chicago and elsewhere. This process maps a patient’s internal eye structure – particularly the blood vessels that are sensitive to light. With a light tester, a retinal scanning exam can produce a detailed image of the retina, which in turn allows our optometrist to effectively diagnose eye health issues including macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinal detachment, and eye cancer. The information from retinal scans is also useful in diagnosing conditions outside of the eye area, including atherosclerosis and congestive heart failure.

How Retinal Scanning Works

For the patient, there isn’t much that’s involved aside from sitting still as the exam is performed. Our optometrist applies the equipment to take a digital retina image of each eye individually. This produces a detailed image of the back of the eye. It also gives our optometrist the ability to examine the condition of the optical nerve. With this image, our optometrist can identify and address eye health conditions that otherwise may have gone unnoticed. Retinal scanning is also useful for monitoring the progression of certain eye conditions.

Regular eye checks and exams are an effective manner of avoiding surprises and eye conditions that build up over time. Many conditions can be corrected or stopped in their tracks if caught early enough. However, several serious eye conditions cannot be reversed once they have progressed too far. To avoid this situation and potentially losing eyesight altogether, regular eye exams supported by tools such as retinal scanning machines are essential.
