Eye and Vision Exams

Eye and Vision Exams

Getting an eye exam is an important part of ensuring your health. At Macqueen Eye Care Center in Chicago, IL, we provide eye exams for those in need.

Why Are Eye Exams Important?

Eye exams help detect eye problems before symptoms develop, when they are at their most treatable. When you have regular eye exams at our optometry clinic, our eye care professional has a chance to help you correct any vision changes and will provide you with tips on eye care.

When You Should Have a Vision Exam

Children will have eye exams as a newborn, in the first year of life, between 12 and 25 months, and between three and five years of age. Adults should have a complete eye exam once in their 20s and once in their 30s. Some exceptions include having eye pain or injury, having diabetes, or if you wear contact lenses. This means you should have more exams regularly. If you are 60 or older then you should have your eyes checked every year or two.

What Happens during an Eye Exam?

A comprehensive eye exam is simple and includes a number of different things. Our doctor will ask about your medical history, including your general health and vision. The visual acuity test is what most people are familiar with. It’s where you read an eye chart to test how well you see. If you need contacts or glasses, the eye doctor will have you look through a phoroptor to determine your prescription. Our eye doctor will also check your pupils, your peripheral vision, your eye movement, your eye pressure, the front part of your eye, and your optic nerve and retina.

Results from an Eye Exam

The results of an eye exam will conclude if you need any vision correction and whether or not your eyes are healthy or you have an eye condition, such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, or cataracts. If you need corrective lenses, you will get a prescription. Any other abnormal results will prompt further treatment.
